“Oh Vrbnik over the Sea”… this beautiful small town located in the east coast of the island of Krk, even has a song written for him.
Vrbnik is a very special place in the island of Krk, the fact that it has its own folksong just emphasises the point. The town was established in medieval times and it was originally a walled town. This little city is separated from the mainland Croatia by the Vinodol channel, but nowadays it is connected to the mainland via the Krk Bridge. The island of Krk is one the rarest islands in Croatia connected to the mainland with a bridge, so it makes the commute that much easier and cheaper than travelling by ferry.
Vrbnik is famous for its yellow wine named “Žlahtina”, the name originates from the word zlahten, which means golden in old Slavic. You absolutely must try “Žlahtina“ when staying there ,just be careful how much you drink, because the streets there are very narrow especially that one street called Klancic which is considered the narrowest street in the world. The Klancic street is only 50cm (20inch) wide.
When you go visit Vrbnik, and you absolutely must, just enjoy the spirit of the town. Enjoy great food, great wine and great people. Visit wine cellars and visit great restaurants, but don’t forget that the greatest experience that you will get from visiting Vrbnik is a sense of humbleness from talking to people and getting to know their ways in the past and today, because Vrbnik is a special place not only because of his position, beautiful streets and see but because of the people who live there make it so special and unique.
The accommodation in Vrbnik is mostly provided in private homes. Look it as an advantage to experience it in a more familiar way.
